Located in southwestern Hsinchu County and adjacent to the Hsinchu Science Park, Baoshan is the first to feel the expanding effects of high-tech development along major highways (Highway 1, Highway 61, High-Speed Rail, and the southeastern mountain ring road). Rich in water resources, Baoshan supplies much of the metropolitan area’s water via the Baoshan and Baoshan No.2 Reservoir scenic zones, making it the main future water source for the planned Science Park Phase III.
Bamboo symbolizes humility and resilience in Chinese culture. Hsinchu County has 450 ha of green bamboo shoots planted, 155 ha of which are in Baoshan. The fine-fibered, delicious shoots can be stir-fried, served cold in salads, or used in soups. They’re also dried for a distinct flavor. Bamboo wood and fiber are used in construction, furniture, crafts, screens, mats, and brooms—an indispensable resource for local artisans.
The Hengshan pear is Baoshan’s staple. Through dwarfing, grafting, and bagging techniques, farmers have developed tender, juicy fruit. Recently, high-grafted “20th Century” pears were introduced, commanding higher prices due to grafting costs. These pears have fine flesh that melts in the mouth and are highly prized by consumers.
Native to Southeast Asia, starfruit thrives in Baoshan’s warm, hilly terrain. Orchards in Baoshan and Sanfeng villages bloom and bear fruit year-round, taking about four months from flowering to harvest. To protect fruit quality, farmers bag each starfruit during development. With its sweet, juicy flesh, starfruit aids digestion, and its juice is used to soothe coughs and nourish the throat.
