Geographical Environment

Located in northwestern Taiwan, Hsinchu County features mainly mountainous and hilly terrain, with flat plains in coastal and river alluvial areas. The terrain rises from northwest to southeast.
Total land area: 1,428 km² (about 4% of Taiwan).
As of Jan 2020: 288,044 males, 276,252 females; total: 564,296.
Economic population is about 41.89%, with most in manufacturing and services, followed by agriculture.
Known nationally for excellence in agricultural administration, producing vegetables, tea, and fruits such as pears, persimmons, 21st-century pears, peaches, oranges, and Oriental Beauty Tea.

Infrastructure

Transportation

Hsinchu County enjoys excellent connectivity to the Taipei metropolitan area and Taoyuan International Airport, supported by National Highways No. 1 and No. 3, High-Speed Rail, east-west expressways, and ring roads.

National Highways

The county is served by two major highways: National Highway No. 1 (Sun Yat-sen Freeway) passes through Hukou and Zhubei with interchanges at Hsinchu Industrial Park and Zhubei; and National Highway No. 3, which passes through Guanxi, Qionglin, and Zhudong with interchanges at Guanxi and Qionglin. The second interchange and the Science Park interchange are completed, forming a comprehensive road network.

Provincial Roads

Major provincial highways include Taiwan Route 15 (linking Xinfeng and Zhubei coastlines), Route 1 (main north-south artery through Hsinchu City), West Coast Expressway, and Route 3 (Zhongfeng Highway connecting Guanxi, Hengshan, Zhudong, Beipu, Emei to Miaoli).

County Roads

Six main county roads traverse east-west and north-south. Route 118 connects Guansi and Zhubei to Hsinchu; Routes 117, 120, and 122 link Xinfeng, Hukou, Zhubei, and Wufeng (Guanwu).

East-West Expressway

This road connects Hsinchu's Nanliao with Zhudong and Route 3, improving accessibility to the Science Park and overall county-city connectivity.

High-Speed Rail

Currently serves D and E trains. Transfers can be made at Liujia Station to the TRA Hsinchu Station via the Liujia Line.

Railway

Mainline railway crosses western Hsinchu through Hukou and Zhubei. The Neiwan Branch Line passes through Zhudong and Hengshan, benefiting tourism and regional logistics.

Water Resources

Baoshan and Emei Reservoirs supply up to 160,000 m³ of water daily to meet domestic and industrial demand.

Electricity

The county has 18 substations with a total installed capacity of 1,845 MW, with three more planned to reach 2,205 MW within five years.

Gas

Gas supply is comprehensive with well-planned medium-pressure stations and pipelines covering most of the county.

Broadband Infrastructure

The county completed broadband conduit works between 2006–2009, covering 433.5 kilometers in total.

Educational Environment

The county hosts one Industrial Technology Research Institute, three universities of science and technology, one technical college, nine senior high/vocational schools, 29 junior high schools (including branches), and 86 elementary schools (including branch schools). Among the population aged 20–39, approximately 59.5% hold college degrees and 33% have high school education.
A Hakka-style cultural center is under construction in Zhubei’s administrative district. National Tsing Hua University and National Chiao Tung University in neighboring Hsinchu City further enhance the educational landscape.
Universities like National Taiwan University, NTUST, NCTU, and NTHU plan to establish branches in the county, strengthening academic-industry-government collaboration.

Tourism Resources

Hsinchu County features diverse terrain and a pleasant climate, with attractions such as cold/hot springs, high mountains, and famous scenic areas: Dabajianshan, Wufeng Giant Trees, Qingquan Scenic Area, Wuzhishan, and Shei-Pa National Park. Other popular destinations include Hongmaogang Recreation Area, mangroves, Jiuxiong Lake Agricultural Zone, Smangus, Guanwu Forest Recreation Area, and Lion’s Head Mountain. These provide ideal leisure retreats.
